It represents an 18-digit number for identification of a logistics unit. SSCC number is ‘embedded’ into barcode type GS1-128 (previously EAN-128), from which it can be easily retrieved by a reader. Its purpose is to identify specific logistics units during manipulation and movement of goods through the supply chain.
Usage of SSCC codes significantly speeds up receipt of goods into a warehouse, whereby an entire pallet can be accepted simply by a single ‘beep’ of a barcode reader.
